These days, golfers no longer scoff at the notion of renting golf clubs at resorts. In fact, a growing trend toward groups renting clubs is only likely to increase because of tighter airport security and bag allowances.
“I have seen the ratio of golfer to rental club change quite a bit in the past few months,” says Charlie Kent, a Golden Links Advisory Board member and director of golf at Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort in San Antonio, Texas. For example, for two recent corporate tournaments held at the resort, Kent had 73 rental club requests out of 116 golfers in the first and 64 rentals out of 84 golfers in the second.
The costs for group rentals average around $60 a day. At San Diego's HRS Golf, a standard set of Callaway Steelhead Plus Woods and Steelhead X-14 irons goes for $57 a day (including one sleeve of CB1 Callaway golf balls), with a minimum rental of eight sets per group.
