Barcelona has been chosen as the venue for the 17th European Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition, to take place November 30 to December 2, 2004, and for the following four years. EIBTM has been held at the Palexpo in Geneva in May since its inception in 1988. Ray Bloom and Paul Flackett launched EIBTM and sold the show to Reed Travel Exhibitions in the late 1990s.

The EIBTM announcement came on the heels of another by Meeting Professionals International, which says that it has joined forces with Bloom, who is launching a new European travel and meetings show, IMEX, premiering in April in Frankfurt. MPI and IMEX will co-market their European events, with the goal of driving attendance to the MPI 2003 Professional Education Conference-Europe, slated for April 4 to 6 in Berlin, and to IMEX, April 8 to 10 in Frankfurt.

Under the agreement, all MPI members preregistered for the PEC-E and IMEX will receive complimentary train transfer from Berlin to Frankfurt and a hosted dinner at the newly renovated Sheraton Frankfurt Hotel and Towers. Additionally, the Sheraton Frankfurt will provide all preregistered MPI planners with a two-night complimentary stay (April 7 and 8). MPI will host one educational session at IMEX, while IMEX will sponsor the attendance of 50 European students at the PEC-E. IMEX will feature 2,000 exhibitors and is projecting 5,500 attendees, including 2,500 hosted buyers.

EIBTM will hold its final Geneva show May 20 to 22, 2003. EIBTM studied detailed submissions from 10 European cities before coming up with a list of five that it considered for future shows: Barcelona, Geneva, Lisbon, Madrid, and Vienna. Barcelona was chosen because it was the most preferred choice of exhibitors, group coordinators, hosted buyers, and other trade visitors in independent research carried out on behalf of EIBTM.

EIBTM has confirmed that the show will move to a new venue every five years.

And Tecnomeeting, a three-day annual business exhibition catering to the congress, convention, and incentive industry and held in June at Fira de Barcelona, will be incorporated into EIBTM 2004.
