* CHANGING FACES Billie Lewis will serve as sales manager at the new Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio (Texas). Lewis comes to the hotel from the Omni, St. Antonio.

The Doubletree Islander Hotel in Newport, R.I., has named Michael Van Darys as its director of sales and marketing. He was director of marketing at the Kansas City Doubletree for one year prior to joining the Doubletree Islander several months ago.

Emily Pazzaglini is director of sales and marketing at Embassy Suites Hotel World Financial Center, which will open in downtown Manhattan in May 2000. She was most recently general manager at Embassy Suites Hotel in Syracuse.

Joseph Gaeta has recently been named director of conference services at the Garden City Hotel, in Garden City, Long Island, N.Y. He was formerly reservations manager for the Michelangelo Hotel in New York City.

Tom Hemer has been named director of hotel sales at the Pittsburgh City Center Hotel. Hemer most recently was director of sales and marketing at the Ontario (Calif.) Airport Marriott.

Kristen Boehning has been appointed director of executive group sales at Saddlebrook Resort, Tampa (Fla.). She will be responsible for small group sales at the resort. Boehning comes to the resort from the Registry Resort in Naples, where she was director of revenue and yield management.

Hilton in the Walt Disney World Resort has announced that Michael Kovensky will be their director of marketing. He was previously director of sales for this Downtown Disney area resort hotel. The hotel also announced the promotion of Jared McLachlan to director of sales from assistant director of sales.

Cindy Highberg has been appointed director of sales for the new Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, scheduled for a spring 2001 opening. Highberg has spent the previous four years as director of sales for the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis.

The new Detroit Marriott Pontiac at Centerpoint will open in the fall of 2000 with Pat Tinetti serving as director of sales and marketing. He comes from an 11-year stint as director of sales and marketing for the Troy (Mich.) Marriott.

Al Eastman has been named director of marketing for The Regal Cincinnati Hotel. He was most recently with Columbia Sussex Corp. in Fort Mitchell, Ky.

Randall Jackson has been named corporate sales manager at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place in Chicago. He will coordinate group sales for national corporate groups requiring 100 or more rooms. Jackson was most recently a senior sales manager at The Hotel Allegro in Chicago.

At the Westin Galleria in Houston, Stacey Moritz has been appointed director of group sales. Among her responsibilities is the management of all computer, software, and telecommunications markets. Moritz was previously sales manager for the Westin Galleria.

At the Hotel Sofitel Los Angeles, Elizabeth Grillos has been named director of sales and marketing. She previously held the same title at the New Otani Hotel & Garden in Los Angeles.

Ramona L. Bieber has been named director of sales and marketing at the Hilton Burbank Airport & Convention Center in Burbank, Calif. Bieber was most recently director of sales at the Hilton Anchorage (Alaska).

Jill Faurer has been appointed director of sales for the newly opened Courtyard by Marriott, Downtown San Diego. Faurer's most recent position was as corporate sales manager of the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego.

At the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa in Maui, Hawaii, Ty Brassie has been named associate director of sales, responsible for group business in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. Brassie was most recently the assistant director of sales at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island. Laura Gydesen has also joined Grand Wailea as associate director of sales. She will focus on the incentive market. Gydesen comes from Grand Wailea's sister property, La Quinta Resort & Club near Palm Springs, Calif.

Brian Soma has assumed the director of sales role for the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. He comes from The Orchid at Mauna Lani, where he was account director.

Cherie Carpenter has been named director of sales and marketing at The Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver (B.C.).She joins the hotel from the Whistler Resort & Conference Centre, where she was sales manager.

Jonathan Campbell joins the Los Angeles office of the Australian Tourist Commission as manager, meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions marketing director in North America. Campbell has worked for the ATC in London since 1993 as manager for market development Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East.

Judy Owen has been promoted to vice president, exhibitor sales and services, at AVW Audio Visual, a Freeman Company. She was formerly the corporate director of exhibitor sales and services at AVW, which is based in Dallas and provides audiovisual support to the meeting, convention, and exposition industry.

Pierre Theriault has rejoined Famous Events/PGI as manager, information technology. Theriault will oversee the interactive division of PGI--an event and communications agency--providing Web services, and CD-ROM and leading-edge technology to corporate clients.

At Wyndham Jade (www.wynjade.com), an incentive and meetings services, corporate travel management, and convention housing services company, Al Griffin has been appointed executive vice president of sales for the incentive and meeting services division. He was most recently vice president of regional sales for Meridian Enterprises Corp., based in Dallas. Forrest Harkrader joins the conventions and housing registration division of Wyndham Jade as director of national accounts. He most recently was with Freeman Decorating Company in New Orleans as director of exhibitor sales.

Donna Boyt was named vice president of sales for Global Events Partners' New York office. Previously she was a senior sales manager for the Denver Convention Center in Colorado. Global Events Partners comprises 35 leading destination management companies and allied service providers.

Cheryl Fritz and Peggy White have been hired as sales managers at The Vail (Colo.) Cascade Hotel & Club. Fritz most recently worked in sales for Simon & Schuster. White comes to the hotel from the St. Regis Aspen in Aspen, Colo.

Mollie Drake has been hired as director of sales and marketing at the Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park, Calif., where she will be responsible for corporate accounts. Drake was most recently director of sales at the Claremont Resort & Spa in Berkeley, Calif.

* GOING PLACES Marriott Conference Centers has taken over management of the Kingsgate Conference Center at the University of Cincinnati. The 20,000-square-foot center offers state-of-the-art meeting space including a 5,355-square-foot ballroom, two boardrooms, and two amphitheaters. The center has fiberoptics throughout and T-1 lines in meeting rooms, which are connected to all 206 guest rooms.

After an $8.5 million renovation, the Wyndham Casa Marina Resort & Beach House in Key West, Fla., will become a flagship property for the Wyndham portfolio. Created by combining the former Marriott Casa Marina Resort and the adjacent Marriott Reach Resort, the new 461-room resort is being completely renovated. Set on the largest private beach in Key West, the new Wyndham will offer more than 15,000 square feet of meeting space, including three ballrooms. The West Lawn, poolside areas, and two ocean piers with gazebos also are available for theme events.

The Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North has opened with 210 casita-style guest rooms and 24,000 square feet of meeting space. Other features: 12,000 square feet of outdoor function space, videoconferencing facilities, a 12,000-square-foot spa, and a partnership with the Troon North Golf Club guaranteeing guests priority tee times.

*BEYOND BORDERS The Fiesta Americana Los Cabos has opened at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. The 278-room oceanfront hotel looks out upon the Ocean Course, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course along the Sea of Cortez. Meeting space accommodates up to 1,100 attendees.

The 298-room Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort & Casino in Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, has added a $6 million Spanish-style golf clubhouse overlooking the newly renovated East Course. Also new is El Mirador Boardroom, whose conference table features individual dataports. The property offers more than 18,000 square feet of meeting space. Also in Puerto Rico, the 506-room Hyatt Regency Cerromar Beach Resort & Casino has upgraded its lobby, guest rooms, and public areas, and has added he 5,000-square-foot Spa del Sol, including fitness center and six treatment rooms. The hotel offers 40,000 square feet of meeting space.

The Hilton Vancouver Metrotown has opened in Burnaby, B.C. The 283-room property, 20 minutes from both downtown Vancouver and the Vancouver International Airport, is part of The Crystal, a mixed-use development that also includes 22,500 square feet of meeting space and 210,000 square feet of retail space. The hotel itself offers 15,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 6,300-square-foot ballroom. High-speed Internet access is also available in all the hotel's meeting rooms.

Shangri-La Hotels has announced a new hotel under development in the United Arab Emirates. The 300-room Shangri-La Dubai is the hotel company's first hotel in the Middle East. Part of a multipurpose complex set for completion in late 2001, the hotel will be near the Dubai World Trade Center and will offer comprehensive meeting space, two health clubs, and a rooftop swimming pool.

The Caribe Hilton in San Juan, P.R., has turned its second floor into a 7,400-square-foot executive conference center with 11 meeting rooms. The hotel's 644 guest rooms have been completely redesigned as well, and all public areas and landscaping have been renovated. In June 2000, the 6,550-square-foot San Cristobal junior ballroom will open, giving the hotel a total of 65,000 square feet of meeting space. Finally, a first-class spa will open in summer 2000.
