* HOTELS/CONFERENCE CENTERS Dolce International has named William Gilchrist corporate director of sales for North America. Most recently, Gilchrist was director of marketing of Oak Brook Hills, a Dolce conference resort in the western suburbs of Chicago.
James Canfield has been named executive director of the Pasadena Conference Center in California. Canfield comes to the Pasadena Conference Center after eight years as director of operations of the SMG-Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Hal Powell has been appointed director of sales and marketing for Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, Va. Powell was previously resident manager and director of marketing for The Sagamore in Lake George, N.Y.
Steve Griffith has joined Opryland Hotel Florida in Osceola County as national sales manager for the Southeast Region. Griffith comes to Orlando after 10 years with the Wyndham El Conquistador Resort in Puerto Rico, where he most recently served as director of association sales.
Patti Kerr Rouse has been appointed area director of sales for The Tremont House-A Wyndham Historic Hotel, Hotel Galvez-A Wyndham Historic Hotel, and Harbor House, all in Galveston, Texas. Rouse has been director of sales for Hotel Galvez.
The Sagamore in Bolton Landing, N. Y., has announced that Gregg Balton is the new director of marketing for the Lake George property. Balton has been with the Sagamore since 1988.
Katharine Hagerty Holmes has been named director of sales for the Tutwiler-A Wyndham Historic Hotel in Birmingham, Ala. Holmes was most recently director of sales and marketing for the Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes, Vt.
Jennifer Klimkowski has been promoted to assistant director of sales at the Sutton Place Hotel in Chicago. Klimkowski previously worked in sales for both hotel and consumer products.
Hilton New Orleans Riverside has announced the following staff changes: Scott W. Baublitz is the new director of sales. Most recently he served as assistant director of sales at the Fontainbleau Hilton Resort & Towers in Miami. John Hages has been promoted to sales manager. He was formerly s senior events direct sales manager. Finally, August Rauchle is the new events direct sales manager. Rauchle comes from the position of assistant front office manager at a New Orleans Hilton hotel.
* GOING PLACES The 261-room Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay will open in December. The oceanfront hotel, whose design was inspired by the grand seaside lodges of the 19th century, is located in Half Moon Bay, 30 minutes from San Francisco International Airport. The property includes the 209-room main building and three adjacent bungalows, with a total of 52 rooms and suites. The resort offers a 16,000-square-foot spa and fitness center and 17,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 7,100-square-foot ballroom. Guests have full privileges at two renowned golf courses: The Links Course, designed by Arnold Palmer, and The Ocean Course, designed by Arthur Hills.
Omni Hotels is partnering with Turner Broadcasting System Inc., a Time Warner Company, on a $100 million expansion of the Omni Hotel at CNN Center in downtown Atlanta. A 593-room, 24-story hotel tower will be constructed adjacent to the existing 470-room hotel, which underwent an extensive $9 million renovation in 1999. The combined hotel and tower will feature 1,063 guest rooms and more than 70,000 square feet of meeting space--including a 20,000-square-foot ballroom with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Centennial Olympic Park--making it the largest hotel in the Omni Hotels chain. Construction of the new tower will be completed by 2003.
Opryland Hotel, Nashville, has begun a three-year renovation in consultation with meeting planners with the aim of making it easier for attendees to find their way around the property. New directional, electronic signs and kiosks will be in place by the end of the year. Renovations have also started on the Cascades Lobby, the main check-in area of the hotel. Next year upgrades will begin on the Magnolia Lobby, enabling guests to check in at the original lobby. The Governor's Ballroom was renovated last year; this year, the Presidential Ballroom is being renovated. And by the end of 2001, all 600 original rooms will be completely renovated, with the addition of double phone lines, cordless phone, Internet access, and fax.
Swissotel Chicago has renovated its 6,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom, its 2,500-square-foot Alpine Ballroom, and four meeting rooms. The 632-room hotel offers a total of 22,600 square feet of meeting space.
New York's Waldorf-Astoria is adding a satellite link system for live audio and video broadcasts, direct high-speed Internet connections in all guest rooms and meeting rooms, copier/ printer/fax machines in all guest rooms, and a cutting-edge business center. The 1,180-room hotel offers meeting space for up to 1,500 attendees.
The Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles is undergoing an extensive renovation and will now be called The Century Plaza Hotel & Spa. The 727-room hotel will add a 30,000-square-foot Asian-themed day spa, set to open in early 2001. Renovations will include the entire California Conference Level's 33 meeting rooms, and two new junior ballrooms will be added. Meanwhile, the Century Plaza Tower building will be reintroduced as the St. Regis Los Angeles. Both hotels will be managed by Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
*BEYOND BORDERS The new Singapore Expo Centre, which officially opened this spring, offers 645,000 square feet of column-free exhibit space along with 270,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space. Also available are nine meeting rooms seating up to 140 guests, and four conference halls that can be combined to seat up to 1,100 guests.
The Paradisus Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, has begun a renovation program that includes the addition of 96 rooms, upgrades in furnishings and amenities to all existing rooms, and a complete spa. The Paradisus brand is part of the Sol Melia Hotels & Resorts family. The additions bring the all-inclusive resort's total room count to 500. The spa will be ready this month, and the remainder of the upgrades will be completed in December. The resort's accommodations are in 29 two-story bungalows just steps from the turquoise Caribbean Sea.
