The Swarovski Group, based in the town of Wattens, near Innsbruck, is known for its machine-cut crystal jewelry, accessories, and collectibles. Now the century-old firm is also known for Swarovski Crystal Worlds (www.swarovski-kristallwelt.com), a subterranean museum/art gallery/theater/restaurant/shopping complex carved into a scenic hillside.
Crystal Worlds combines Vegas-like glitz with Disneyesque charm to attract some 600,000 visitors a year. On display in the underground passageways are cut-crystal pieces of every size and shape, and works of art by, among others, Dali and Warhol. Among the venues available for private group events of up to 150 are meeting rooms, theaters, gourmet dining facilities, and glittering spaces called “chambers of wonder.” American-based companies such as Microsoft and Boston Consulting have booked events there.
