Brand New Marcus Hotels and Resorts opens its newest property, the Miramont Resort in Indian Wells, CA, in November. The 11-acre, Mediterranean-style resort will have 226 rooms, including 60 suites, and 10,000 square feet of meeting space. A golf concierge will help golfers set up tee times at any of 40 area courses.
Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers opened its new 25,000-square-foot Executive Conference Center in September, with accreditation from theInternational Association of Conference Centers already in place. The facility, with 12 meeting rooms (for groups as large as 75), takes up one level of the Sheraton but has its own entrance and marquee.
Crowne Plaza is moving in to the fast-growing city of Elgin, IL. About 15 minutes from O'Hare International Airport, the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Chicago-Elgin will offer 243 guest rooms and 10,000 square feet of meeting space.
Under New Management Management at the 109-year-old Hotel del Coronado (CA) has been turned over to Destination Hotels & Resorts, which also manages such properties as The Ritz-Carlton, Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, CA; Vail (CO) Cascade Hotel & Club; and Wild Dunes Resort, Isle of Palms, SC. Under the new management, more than $50 million will be invested in the 692-room landmark hotel over the next five years.
After a $4.5 million renovation of the former Doubletree Guest Suites, Westin Suites, Philadelphia Airport opened this summer. Just one mile from the airport, the property offers 251 two-room suites and 8,000 square feet of meeting space.
Another Westin rebranding will happen in Charleston, SC in the spring after the Francis Marion Hotel completes a $1.5 million upgrade. To be called Westin Francis Marion Hotel, the 1924 property has 226 rooms and 14,000 square feet of meeting space, and has been designated a member of Historic Hotels of America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Upward and Outward From offices to guest rooms in a little over a year's time: That's the plan at 633 St. Clair in Chicago, where Wyndham Hotel Corporation and Oxford Capital Partners have signed an agreement to lease a significant part of the building and turn it into a hotel. By late 1998, the Wyndham Hotel Chicago will have 413 rooms (averaging 400 square feet with nine-foot ceilings), 14,300 square feet of meeting space, and a 5,000-square-foot ballroom, all within walking distance of the Loop.
Caesars Palace, a classic on the Las Vegas Strip, plans to open its new 29- story, 1,200-room Palace Tower by the end of December. The expansion brings the resort's guest-room total to 2,500 and adds 110,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 30,000-square-foot ballroom and two boardrooms. A new 22,000-square-foot spa also debuts, with 28 treatment rooms and every amenity from a rock-climbing wall to a boxing ring to a relaxation chamber with a "Zen waterfall."
Renovation Time At Park Avenue and 56th Street in Manhattan, the 1926 landmark hotel, The Drake, has $45 million in improvements and a new name. Now called Swissotel New York, The Drake, the hotel's 495 rooms have been remodeled and the number of suites has gone from 62 to 108. Rooms feature fax machines and three phones.
After two years and $160 million, Sheraton Maui is again open for business. More than half the resort's 510 guest rooms and suites are entirely new and the balance has been remodeled--as has nearly every aspect of the property.
Boston's historic Omni Parker House began a $45 million renovation in June that will upgrade its 550 guest rooms, remodel banquet and event facilities, and add a new bar and restaurant by September 1998. *
