CONFERENCE CENTERS The Grandover Resort Conference Center will offer 248 guest rooms in an 11-story tower when it opens in January 1999. The property will include 45,000 square feet of meeting space, spa facilities, and two world-class championship golf courses (already open for play).

International Conference Resorts has been named to manage the Carefree Conference Resort in Carefree, Ariz. A $10 million renovation and expansion of the property includes a 10,000-square-foot meeting room, 62 guest rooms, and two new special event venues--the 8,000-square-foot Carefree Opera House with a 3,000-square-foot balcony; and The Saloon, with indoor and outdoor bars. The project, set for completion this fall, brings the total number of accommodations to 248 rooms, suites, and casitas.

International Conference Resorts also recently was named to manage the Ocean Place Hilton Resort on Ocean Boulevard in Long Branch, N.J. The 254-room resort, built in 1990, offers 35,500 square feet of meeting space.

Benchmark Hospitality has been named to manage White Oaks Conference Center in Charlotte, N.C., a restored, 28,000-square-foot mansion that dates from 1915. The property offers 12 guest rooms plus conference and dining space for up to 60 people.

Whispering Woods Hotel and Conference Center in Olive Branch, Miss., has completed an $8.5 million renovation after changing its name from the Holiday Inn-Executive Conference Center earlier this year. All 181 guest rooms, along with public areas and meeting space, have been redone. The 125-seat amphitheater was upgraded from floor to ceiling.

The African-theme Wyndham Safari Resort in Orlando, Fla., recently opened its new conference center. The opening of the stand-alone conference center increases the 489-room, 96-suite resort's total meeting space to 12,500 square feet.

This summer Doubletree Hotel North Shore Executive Meeting Center was accepted into the International Association of Conference Centers. The 368-room center, in Skokie, Ill., earned the designation after a $5.5 million renovation. More than 20,000 square feet of function space is available at the center.

Lakeway Inn, a Dolce Conference Resort, recently began a $20 million renovation that will nearly double the size of the Austin, Texas, property by July 1999. A new building overlooking Lake Travis will be the resort's centerpiece, growing the property to 240 guest rooms and more than 20,000 square feet of meeting space. The expansion also will upgrade communications technology and add a full-service business center.

The $8.5 million Conference Center of the Americas is set to open in December 1999 at the 245-room Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Fla. The Center will be located in the Biltmore Hotel Country Club, after a remodeling of 20,000 square feet of unused space in the club and the addition of 6,100 square feet of new space that will fit two state-of-the-art amphitheaters seating 60 and 90 people. The improvements will bring total meeting space to 68,000 square feet.

Pfizer Inc. has signed a 15-year lease for the $35 million Corporate Learning and Development Center at the Doral Arrowwood in Rye Brook, N.Y. Under the agreement, Pfizer will conduct its worldwide training at the new facility, to be developed by Doral Hotels and Resorts. The center will have 110,000 square feet of meeting space, and 100 guest rooms will be added to the Doral Arrowwood to accommodate Pfizer's estimated 33,000 room nights per year.

The Stoweflake Resort and Conference Center in Stowe, Vt., recently opened its Executive Conference Wing. Part of a multimillion-dollar expansion, the wing includes 40 luxury rooms and suites and a spa and fitness center. The Conference Center has been expanded to 12 meeting rooms and a total of 15,000 square feet of meeting space.

Zermatt Resort, Utah's first themed year-round resort and conference center, broke ground in Midway, Utah. Built as a Swiss Alpine village, the resort will be managed by Marriott Conference Centers. Scheduled for completion in spring of 2000, it is designed for small to midsized groups and will include a 230-room full-service hotel and a 35,000-square-foot conference center.

The 1,620-room Wyndham Anatole Hotel has completed an expansion to Trinity Hall, adding exhibit and function space to the 74,000-square-foot hall, and bringing the total square footage of the Trinity Conference Center to 145,000 square feet. The addition includes a multipurpose ballroom of more than 45,000 square feet and prefunction space overlooking the Anatole's seven-acre park. Total meeting space now logs in at more than 300,000 square feet.
