In December of 1973, a small group of professionals in an emerging field known as "incentive travel" convened at the Americana Hotel in New York. Their goal: to form an international, professional, not-for-profit association dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in incentives. Twenty-five years later, the Society of Incentive & Travel Executives (SITE) has grown to more than 2,000 members in 87 countries, spanning the entire incentive travel universe, from hotels, resorts, airlines, and cruise lines to destination management companies, incentive travel houses, and corporate executives.

SITE's primary goal is education for both buyers and suppliers of incentive travel and related industries. Educational programs are geared to all levels, ranging from an introduction to incentive travel, offered at industry trade shows, to specialized seminars held at SITE's national conferences and universities. SITE also offers a self-study course for continuing education credits, as well as awarding the CITE certification (see below).
