Palace Resorts has purchased the Playacar Golf Course, an 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course designed by Robert Von Hagge. The course, 50 minutes south of Cancun, is in the midst of lush Mayan jungles.

The Grand Dunes Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, N.C., opened for play this spring. The resort/residential community encompasses 2,200 acres between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The course measures 7,618 yards from the black championship tees, and offers five other sets of tees for golfers of all skill levels.

The Cozumel Country Club & Golf Course will open this summer. The Nicklaus Group — designed, 18-hole, par-72 course is Cozumel's first 18-hole championship course and will offer hybrid Bermuda turf and feature a practice range and green. The course will also include a clubhouse with pro shop. The Cozumel Country Club incorporates the natural habitats of the island in its design and construction. The club's first nine holes are slated to open this summer, while the remaining nine will open in December.

The Palmer Course at La Cantera, a new, 18-hole championship golf course in San Antonio, Texas, recently unveiled a 15,300-square-foot clubhouse. The resort's Palmer Course lies adjacent to the existing Resort Course at La Cantera, home to the PGA Tour's Texas Open. Both courses cater to Westin La Cantera Resort guests, as well as to the public. The Palmer Course, designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer and The Palmer Course Design Company, will be managed by Troon Golf.

The Wyndham Rose Hall Resort & Country Club, Montego Bay, Jamaica, recently completed a $4 million renovation of its par-71 championship Three Palms Ocean Course. The seaside course's redesign, orchestrated by Robert Von Hagge, includes new greens, tee boxes, and cart paths, as well as rebuilt fairways and an improved irrigation system. A feature of Von Hagge's new design is the incorporation of the natural landscape and historical landmarks into the course layout. The name of the course, by the way, derives from Rose Hall's infamous owner, Annee Palmer, who murdered her three husbands and had them secretly buried near the beach, each one under a palm tree.

The century-old Grove Park Inn Golf Course at Asheville, N.C.'s, Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa closed in June for a $2 million renovation. The course should be back in business before the end of the year.

KemperSports is developing a second 18-hole course at Lansdowne Resort, Leesburg, Va. It will complement the property's highly regarded Robert Trent Jones, Jr. — designed course.

Designed by architect Tom Fazio and being built on the site of the former Glenview Naval Air Station base, the $25 million The Glen Club, Glenview, Ill., will feature an 18-hole layout. The 40,000-square-foot clubhouse will be home to the Illinois PGA and the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.

Turnberry Hotel, Turnberry, Scotland, has opened a links golf academy. The Turnberry Hotel, a Westin Resort property, now features the Colin Montgomerie Links Golf Academy. Montgomerie co-designed the academy with golf course architect Donald Steel. The academy features include two indoor/outdoor teaching areas, 16 covered bays, and a nine-hole par-3 and -4 golf course opening this year. The academy is located next to the resort's golf clubhouse and near the first tees of the Alisa and the Arran championship courses. The property is also adding nine cottages and 12 lodges, which overlook the golf courses and the coastline; creating three new meetings rooms; expanding its spa facilities; and extending its Turnberry suite to hold 300 people, theater-style.

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa, Farmington, Penn., will renovate the resort's two PGA-rated golf courses, Mystic Rock and The Links. Plans include redeveloping the courses' landscaping and changing the height of the fairways and rough.

The Breakers Palm Beach, in Palm Beach, Fla., held a celebration for the reopened Ocean Course after its dramatic renovation. The Ocean Course's $20 million renovation features new golf and tennis facilities.

The Westin Innisbrook Resort, Palm Harbor, Fla., has begun a renovation program at its Innisbrook Troon Golf Institute. The resort's two 18-hole courses have been renamed and lengthened. The previously named Hawk's Run is now Highlands North. It has been extended to 6,515 yards and lowered to a par-70. The Highlands South course, formerly Eagle's Watch, is now 6,768 yards and a par-71. The institute's renovation also includes an expansion of its practice facility from 13 to 15 acres, the addition of a 1,000-square-foot indoor teaching facility, and a video and computer swing analysis system.

Our Lucaya, Grand Bahama Island, opened The Butch Harmon School of Golf. Harmon, Tiger Woods' current teacher, has created a school that offers a range of practice facilities replicating different playing conditions encountered on courses around the world. The facility has indoor swing video analysis, a teaching seminar area, and covered teaching bays. In addition, Our Lucaya offers 36 championship holes of golf, featuring the Our Lucaya Reef Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., and the Lucayan Course, designed by Dick Wilson.

Turtle Point Golf Club, Kiawah Island, S.C., recently reopened its Jack Nicklaus — designed championship course after five months of extensive renovations. The Golden Bear himself, as well as his design company, oversaw the modification of the greens complexes, bunkering, and tee boxes to enhance the course's fairness and playability. In addition to the course refurbishments, construction of a clubhouse, reminiscent of antebellum mansions, has begun. While offering fairway views, a new pro shop, and a 100-seat restaurant, the clubhouse will also feature 3,500 square feet of meeting space. Clubhouse completion is anticipated in early 2002.
