What's Up in Calgary? Hotel development is moving at an unprecedented rate in Calgary. Seven new properties are either open or on their way to opening, and many other properties are undergoing renovation. When the hotels are completed, the city will have 9,519 hotel rooms (up from 8,700), with 3,755 of them in the downtown core.

Here is a rundown of a few of the area's hotel developments:

* Marriott Hotel Corporation took over the management of downtown's Radisson Plaza Hotel. This will be Marriott's first hotel in Western Canada. The company plans $7.5 million in renovations to the 383-room hotel, which is connected to the Calgary Convention Centre.

* A 326-room Sheraton Hotel, the first major development in the downtown core since 1981, is scheduled to open in September 1998. The 15-story, all-suite property will include a large recreation center and a swimming pool.

* The Palliser Hotel, Calgary's oldest, will be adding a swimming pool and a larger fitness center. The hotel also has a limited number of guest rooms that are equipped with a computer and Internet access via a high-speed cable system.

* A local developer is transforming a red-brick historical building near Calgary's Eau Claire market into 29 luxury suites that will cater to business travelers.

In addition, a program to expand Calgary's international airport over the next 20 years has been announced. Air Canada's terminal will be expanded, as will customs and immigration facilities, parking, and taxiways. To cover costs of the program, passengers will pay a $5 surcharge on all tickets at point of purchase.

Canadian Pacific Launches Program to Benefit Women The Canadian Pacific hotel company has launched its "Adopt-a-Shelter" program, in which each of the company's hotels has "adopted" a local women's shelter by donating goods and services. In addition to furniture, bedding, and other household items, the shelters will receive financial support through the Canadian Pacific Charitable Foundation, which will donate $150,000 over the next three years to the Canadian Women's Foundation for distribution to women's shelters.

Canadian Pacific Hotels is the largest owner-operated hotel company in Canada, with 26 properties.

Winnipeg Targets Executive Meetings The Winnipeg Convention Centre has opened a new Executive Conference Centre, which encompasses a boardroom that seats 12 at the table and ten around the periphery. The room features a videoconferencing system, special microphones for echo-free conference calls, computer ports, and hand-held remote controls for video cameras.

The rest of the downtown convention center has 115,000 square feet of function space, including a 21,600-square-foot area on the first level, a 600-seat theater and 12,000 square feet of divisible meeting space on the second level, and 78,000 square feet of column-free space on the third.

National Trade Centre Shows Strong Booking Four months after its opening, the National Trade Centre in Toronto has booked 14 new events, representing $1.1 million in confirmed new business. With more than one million square feet of exhibit space, the facility is positioned as North America's third-largest trade center under one roof.

* The 380-room Four Seasons Hotel Toronto is offering a winter package for groups booking the property between December 1997 and March 31, 1998. A group booking ten or more rooms gets superior guest rooms for $135 a night (all figures in U.S. dollars), with upgrades available at "minimum cost"; complimentary meeting space; a $46 per-person meal package that includes Continental breakfast, lunch, and two coffee breaks daily; and complimentary VIP meeting setup. The offer is subject to availability and is not applicable to previously booked groups. The hotel has 21 function rooms that accommodate 10 to 450 persons for meetings. * In December, Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts will open its fourth hotel in North America. The Pan Pacific Lodge, in Whistler, BC, is the company's first resort lodge. It will be located in the heart of Whistler Village, at the base of two world-class ski mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb. Within a few paces of the lodge are two gondola ski lifts. Each of the lodge's 121 suites will have views of the mountains or the village, plus a fireplace and fully equipped kitchen. The lodge will also have a restaurant, health club, outdoor heated pool, and a spa.

* The 282-room Novotel Ottawa has completed a $2.5 million renovation, including the addition of the 16-seat gourmet Cafe Bar, the first hotel lobby coffee bar in the capital city. Also new is a business services program that includes 24-hour access to the hotel's exercise facility.

* The Royal York, the flagship of the Canadian Pacific Hotels, has been awarded the 1997 CAA/AAA Four Diamond Award for the 11th consecutive year. The hotel, located in downtown Toronto, recently completed a $100 million renovation and restoration of the lobby, guest rooms, and all public space, and added a health club.
