In February The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles, and the JW Marriott Hotel, Los Angeles, opened their doors at L.A. LIVE, a $2.5 billion, four-million-square-foot sports-and-entertainment center that aims to revitalize downtown Los Angeles. Both hotels share space at L.A. LIVE in a 54-story tower that is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified.
Serving as the long-awaited headquarters hotel for the Los Angeles Convention Center, the JW Marriott features 878 guest rooms, a rooftop pool, lobby lounge, restaurant, and fitness center. Located on the upper floors of the tower, the Ritz-Carlton offers 123 guest rooms, a lobby lounge, restaurant, private dining room and wine cave, fitness center, and outdoor pool.
Both hotels share more than 77,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 25,000-square-foot ballroom, and guests of the JW Marriott also have access to the Ritz-Carlton's 8,000-square-foot spa.
Venue Updates Conference Centers
The News: The new center opened in October.
Specs: The 160,000-square-foot center features 20 meeting rooms and Toronto's largest ballroom, at 43,900 square feet.
Extra: It is the first LEED Silver-certified conference center in Canada and is connected to the Direct Energy Centre, which offers an additional one million square feet of exhibition space.
Emory Conference Center Hotel
The News: The IACC-certified center completed an expansion last May and applied for LEED Silver certification.
Specs: The new five-story structure connects to the existing center and includes 127 new guest rooms for a total of 325 rooms, and another 6,000 square feet of meeting space for a total of 32,000 square feet.
FSU Conference Center
The News: The 47,000-square-foot center opened in February 2010.
Specs: It features a 400-seat auditorium, a 320-seat dining room, an executive boardroom, and eight additional breakout rooms.
Extra: The conference center also offers three video walls, LCD screens, webcasting, wireless Internet, and e-media services.
The News: In January, the property signed IACC's “Gold Tier Code of Sustainability,” signifying it has achieved 85 percent of the association's suggested green initiatives.
Specs: The 45,000-square-foot center offers 296 guest rooms, a multi-pool aquatic complex, 45 holes of golf, six dining facilities, and Spa Minérale, a full-service spa.
Georgetown University Hotel and Conference Center
The News: Aramark has managed the center since September 2008.
Specs: 146 guest rooms, 13,000 square feet of meeting space, and 14 meeting rooms for groups of 5 to 1,000
The Millennium Broadway Hotel
The News: In December 2009, the 625-room hotel upgraded its meeting facilities with a new Wi-Fi system.
Specs: The hotel's IACC-approved, on-site conference center features 45 meeting rooms that span seven floors and 110,000 square feet of meeting space.
Eaglewood Resort & Spa
The News: The resort achieved the Green Seal™ certification in January. Green Seal is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainability.
Specs: 38,000 square feet of IACC-certified meeting space, 295 rooms, a spa, and an 18-hole championship golf course
Sentry Centers — Midtown East
The News: The new conference center opened in November.
Specs: 40,000 square feet of meeting space, 12 meeting rooms, the 4,200-square-foot Wharton Ballroom, and a 5,000-square-foot rooftop terrace
Extra: The venue is located minutes from Grand Central Station.
Redford Conference Center
The News: The new conference center broke ground in January and is slated to open this summer adjacent to the Sundance Resort.
Specs: 3,500 square feet of meeting space in addition to the resort's 10,000 square feet of space. The resort features 95 guest cottages, two restaurants, and a bar.
Extra: The conference center is being built to minimally impact the environment, in keeping with owner Robert Redford's vision.
The Thayer Hotel
West Point, N.Y.
The News: Dolce Hotels and Resorts began managing the hotel last November.
Specs: The property is located on the grounds of the U.S. Military Academy and features 149 rooms, 10 conference rooms, and more than 15,000 square feet of meeting space for groups of 15 to 300.
SmithBucklin, the association management company, has promoted Howard F. Fisher to vice president, sales services. He will lead the sales services team to help client organizations develop and implement exhibit and sponsorship programs.
The Georgia World Congress Center Authority has appointed Frank Poe executive director. A 38-year convention center veteran, Poe most recently served as director of the Dallas Convention Center.
