After 34 years as Boston's leading convention sales professional, Paul Lanigan, senior convention sales manager at The Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, retired at the end of March. Lanigan leaves having solicited and booked a record number of conventions during his career, amounting to more than five million room nights and $1.4 million in spending for the city of Boston.
Lanigan's first sales position was as convention sales manager at the Hotel Statler (now the Boston Park Plaza Hotel), followed by a six-year sales position at the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau. In 1962, he came back to Beantown to head the Boston Convention and Tourist Bureau, then a department of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed convention manager in 1975, when the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau was created.
HOTELS AND TRAVEL Timothy M. Lane is the new president and chief executive officer of Holiday Inn Worldwide. He had been president, Asia and the Middle East, for PepsiCo Restaurants International. Bryan D. Langton remains as chairman of Holiday Inn Worldwide until his retirement in December.
Brian Gamache has been named president of the Williams Hospitality Group, based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Williams owns and manages El Conquistador Resort & Country Club, El San Juan Hotel & Casino, and the Condado Plaza Hotel & Casino. Gamache will continue on as president of El Conquistador.
Frank Calaguire, former vice president of sales for Hyatt Corporation, has joined Renaissance Hotels as senior vice president of marketing.
Mary Swenson has been named vice president, worldwide reservations and sales, for Best Western International. The hotel company's former managing director, worldwide reservations and marketing distribution, Swenson will be based in Phoenix.
Lisa Nash was appointed director of sales, national accounts for Adam's Mark Hotels & Resorts, based in St. Louis (NV). Nash had been senior sales manager at the Stouffer Renaissance, St. Louis.
Len Myers was appointed director of marketing at the Marriott at Metro Center in Washington, DC. Myers, a native of Alexandria, VA, had been director of marketing for the Tysons Corner Marriott in Vienna, VA.
Leslie Nannen was named director of sales and marketing for the new Clarion Hotel Hollywood Beach (FL). Nannen had been director of sales and marketing at the Holiday Inn-p;Atlanta Central.
Joe Forster has been named vice president, sales and marketing, for the Scottsdale (AZ) Plaza Resort. He will oversee all sales and marketing, with a focus on corporate meeting business, his area of expertise. He had been director of sales for the Seabrook Island (SC) Conference Resort.
David Scott has joined Harrah's Reno (NV) and the Hampton Inn at Harrah's Reno as director of sales. Scott had been director of marketing for Doubletree Hotels and Guest Suites/City Hotels USA in Salt Lake City, UT.
Sandy Aarons has been named director of sales and marketing for the Sheraton Newport Beach (CA). She had been associate director of sales at the Waterfront Hilton Beach Resort in Huntington Beach, CA.
At the newly renovated Kahala Mandarin Oriental (formerly the Kahala Hilton) in Honolulu, Allison G. Kneubuhl has been appointed director of sales and marketing. She was formerly the director of sales at the Mandarin Oriental in San Francisco.
The new Aston Wailea Resort (formerly the Maui Inter-Continental) has appointed Ed Sowers as general manager. He had been assistant vice president for Aston Hotels & Resorts for the past year. Alex Doyle stays on as the resort's director of sales, a position he held with the Maui Inter-Continental since 1989.
The Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort & Country Club in Puerto Rico, set to open in August, has made several appointments. Bryan Guillot was named vice president of sales and marketing for Tishman Hotel Corporation, initially responsible for the sales and marketing efforts of the Westin Rio Mar. Guillot had been director of marketing at the Walt Disney World Swan. Also at the resort, Reinhard Werthner was named managing director. He had been vice president of concept development for Marriott Corporation. Ramon L. Sanchez has been named director of sales and marketing. He had been executive director of sales and marketing for the Condado Beach Trio in Santurce.
The Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver has promoted Stephen Peters to the position of executive assistant manager. He had been the hotel's director of marketing since 1988.
CONVENTION CENTERS AND BUREAUS Stephen B. Richer has been appointed executive director of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau in Gulfport, MS. Richer is the former president of the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The Portland Oregon Visitors Association (POVA) has chosen Joe D'Alessandro from a field of 300 candidates to be its new president. He joins POVA from the Oregon Tourism Commission, where he was executive director.
Sally Noona has returned to her home town to join the sales team of the Virginia Beach Department of Convention & Visitor Development. She will focus on the medical, education, and association markets. Noona had been director of convention sales for the City of Norfolk (VA) Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Jan Roy, CMP, has been named director of corporate sales for the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau. She had been manager of sales promotion for McCormick Place in Chicago.
