The Mobile, Ala., Convention & Visitors Bureau has named Richard Mack III as its director of convention sales. Mack formerly was associate director of sales for the New York City Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Bob Snyders of the Grand Rapids, Mich./Kent County Convention & Visitors Bureau has stepped into the new position of director of special markets. The position includes regional and national conventions for religious organizations, and it coincides with the construction of a new, $220 million convention center that will open in December 2004. Snyders had served since 1997 as convention sales manager at the Grand Rapids/Kent County CVB.
Gerald Wolsborn has joined Adam's Mark Hotels & Resorts as general manager of the Dallas hotel. Wolsborn has more than 25 years of hotel management experience. Prior to joining Adam's Mark, Wolsborn served as general manager for the Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel in Palo Alto, Calif., and as vice president/managing director for La Mansion Del Rio Hotel in San Antonio, Texas.
Also within Adam's Mark, Ben Soto, senior vice president, is relocating to Jacksonville, Fla., where he will oversee six properties: Dallas; Mobile, Ala.; Charlotte and Winston-Salem, N.C.; and Columbia, S.C. Soto previously served as senior vice president overseeing six Adam's Mark hotels in the Western region. Before joining Adam's Mark in 1998, Soto had a 17-year career with Hyatt Corp.
The San Antonio, Texas, Convention & Visitors Bureau has announced two promotions. John Solis has been promoted to vice president of sales and marketing. Solis joined the SACVB in 1985 and previously was director of special projects. Sally Forrest has been named director of marketing, convention sales and services. Forrest has been with the SACVB for 13 years and previously was associate director of convention sales. Forrest succeeds Alicia Vargas, who retired.
The San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau has named Jennifer Logan sales manager in the hotel meetings department. Logan most recently was express meeting manager.
Karen Smith has been named convention services coordinator at the Springfield, Mo., Convention and Visitors Bureau. She was previously the bureau's sales administrative assistant.
The Portland, Ore., Visitors Association has hired two new sales managers, Tamara Kennedy and Debbie Rubel. Kennedy most recently spent seven years with Hilton Corp. Rubel previously was a Portland-based sales manager for Princeville, Hawaii, Resort. She has more than 17 years of hospitality industry experience.
Three promotions have been announced at Hilton New Orleans Riverside: John S. Hages, convention sales manager; Dorje Romito, sales manager; and Dena Underwood, events direct sales manager. Hages is responsible for groups with 376 to 600 rooms, Romito is responsible for groups from the Washington, D.C., area and Western states with room nights between 50 and 375; Underwood's responsibilities include booking rooms, meeting space, and catering services.
Mike Kennedy has been named director of sales and marketing for The Founders Inn in Virginia Beach, Va. Previously, Kennedy was director of sales and marketing for Doral Forrestal Hotel in Princeton, N.J.
At The Homestead, a resort in Hot Springs, Va., Barbara Bailey is now sales manager and Michael Valach is director of the outdoor activities program. Bailey comes from Marriott, where she held sales management positions in a variety of target markets, including corporate, association, tour, and travel. Valach was at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in Snowshoe, W.Va.
In Chicago, the Hyatt Conference Center opened in August. The 111,000-square-foot conference center is an addition to the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, the only hotel directly linked to Chicago's McCormick Place. The conference center is being marketed to small- and mid-sized groups.
Adam's Mark Hotels & Resorts is expanding and renovating three of its hotel properties. The Adam's Mark Daytona Beach Resort is on schedule with a $45 million expansion that will add 306 luxury rooms, bringing the hotel's total to 746. The expansion also adds more than 30,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, for a total of 60,000. The Adam's Mark in Mobile, Ala., is in the final phase of a multimillion-dollar renovation of its 375 guest rooms. Completed work at the Adam's Mark in Grand Junction, Colo., included renovation of 7,000 square feet of meeting space, and the addition of 4,000 square feet of meeting space.
Radisson Hotels & Resorts recently broke ground on a $48 million, 404-room Radisson Plaza hotel in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The 14-story hotel adjoins the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and is expected to open by February of 2003.
The Wyndham Milwaukee Center Hotel has invested $4.5 million to update and renovate guest rooms, two restaurants, and its meeting space. The Wyndham has 220 guest rooms and more than 11,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 5,000-square-foot ballroom.
Gwinnett County, Ga., officials have broken ground on a $90-million expansion to the Gwinnett Civic & Cultural Center in Duluth, Ga. The expansion includes a 21,600-square-foot, multi-functional ballroom, and an 11,600-seat arena. The existing center consists of a 50,000-square-foot exhibit hall, 14 meeting rooms, and a performing arts center. The new ballroom is scheduled to open in the summer of 2002, and the arena in the spring of 2003.
