In Search of the Perfect Meeting
After more than 35 years in search of the “perfect meeting,” I find myself continuing to raise the bar or endeavoring to measure up to someone who excels in producing a quality function; someone who demonstrates the expertise needed to formulate a memorable experience for attendees.
Recently it was my privilege to attend training sessions where effective techniques were demonstrated by master woodworkers. One of the pros demonstrated how to make the “perfect wood joint,” using only modern equipment. His finished product appeared to be both excellent and durable. The next instructor didn't care much for modern machines. Using only hand tools, he demonstrated how to develop both a pleasing-to-the-eye wood joint and one that had its own individual characteristics. Each method exhibited a masterful approach and a fine finished product.
It is not so different with the processes involved in efficient meeting planning. There is much to be learned from those who have perfected methods that really work, using techniques not recognized by more modern methods. However, with the rapid changes we are experiencing via modern technology, it is imperative that we be receptive to more efficient ways to produce a memorable meeting experience.
Often, we find ourselves racing the clock to meet the pre-determined dates and deadlines to assure that all is in place and ready for the planned function. It is then that we need to again look at the proven foundational methods. Building on those methods and including all means of communication currently available, we will produce the quality function that we desire.
RCMA continues to heighten the awareness of excellent meeting planning and bring together those who are masters of excellence. It is a joy to be a part of such an endeavor, and my hat is off to each of you who are so diligent in facing your responsibilities as we all continue our search for the perfect meeting.
