Asian Properties Come on Strong
PAN PACIFIC GLENMARIE KUALA LUMPUR recently opened ANDANA SPA, a 20,000-square-foot facility, with a range of massages and treatments based on Asian and European therapies. The Malaysian hotel is part of the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club, and it overlooks two 18-hole golf courses. The hotel's function rooms can host up to 500 guests.
Le Méridien last year added LE MÉRIDIEN KUALA LUMPUR in Malaysia to its portfolio. The 422-room hotel in the Kuala Lumpur Sentral precinct offers direct access to Sentral Station's new express rail service, meaning that Kuala Lumpur International Airport is just 28 minutes away. The hotel has conference and banquet facilities, as well as three restaurants and bars. Guests have access to a health club and a swimming pool with surrounding roof-deck garden.
After extensive renovations, the former RIHGA Royal Hotel Miri, Malaysia, reopened in July as the MIRI MARRIOTT RESORT & SPA. The 220-room property, with views of the South China Sea, is Marriott's sixth in Malaysia.
Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort in Penang, Malaysia, has been closed since December for a major redevelopment. The upgraded property will reopen in mid-2006 with a somewhat longer name: SHANGRI-LA'S RASA SAYANG RESORT & SPA.
SHERATON PATTAYA RESORT opened in Pattaya, Thailand, this summer, with 156 rooms. The property, featuring landscaped gardens and ocean views, is adjacent to the Pattaya Exhibition and Conference Hall. It's just an hour from the new Bangkok International Airport, scheduled to open in late 2005.
JAL Hotels Co. Ltd. has opened five Asia/Pacific hotels this summer, four in Japan and one in the North Pacific Republic of Palau. The 158-room PALAU ROYAL RESORT is a six-story hotel with ocean-facing balconies and a full-service spa (the first spa in Palau, which comprises more than 300 islands and is 470 miles east of the Philippines in the Pacific). The 257-room HOTEL NIKKO HIMEJI, in Himeji, Japan, is approximately 31 miles west of Kobe. The 330-room HOTEL NIKKO NARA opened in July after renovation and conversion from the Mitsui Garden Hotel Nara. Established in 710, Nara was Japan's first permanent capital and is home to several World Heritage sites, including Todaiji Temple. HOTEL NIKKO HITACHI has 121 rooms with free high-speed Internet LAN in every room. Hitachi, headquarters to Hitachi Ltd., is 75 miles northeast of Tokyo. The 242-room HOTEL JAL CITY NAGANO opened in Nagano City, known for hosting the 1998 Winter Olympic Games.
In the South Korean capital, the 185-room PARK HYATT SEOUL opened in April, directly opposite COEX, the convention and exhibition center.
Hong Kong — based Shangri-La Hotels will open the 200-room SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, MANZHOULI in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in late 2007. In the city center area, a 20-minute drive from the airport and five minutes from the train station, the hotel will feature data ports, satellite TV, and broadband Internet access in its guest rooms. The meeting and banqueting facilities will be the largest in the city, and will include a 116,150-square-foot grand ballroom and nine function rooms totaling 10,765 square feet.
THE CROWNE PLAZA KARON BEACH was scheduled, at press time, to open in August in Phuket, Thailand, with 164 villas, 168 guest rooms and suites, and the Tea Tree Spa.
