Education at Sea

“Sailing, sailing” is fast becoming the theme song for many a religious meeting planner, as cruises attract an ever-increasing number of groups to the high seas.

Keeping up with the trend, RCMA and the world's largest cruise line joined forces for the second year to conduct an “Education at Sea” seminar for members of the association.

Beginning their voyage in Miami, planners visited Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Ocho Rios on their seven-day journey aboard the 102,000 ton Carnival Victory.

RCMA participants shared in learning experiences covering the advantages of shipboard meetings, special group rates, and logistics.

Robert Benz, vice president, Carnival Corporate Club marketing, said that points of embarkation are continuing to be added, making the trips more accessible. Ships are also expanding onboard activities and adding meeting space in order to accommodate group events such as Bible studies, worship services, and lectures.

“The Carnival experience was outstanding,” said Barry Jones, manager of conference planning, Family Life. “I would expect a cruise-based event to easily eclipse the appeal of our destination events, which are extremely popular. There is so much built-in value when you run the numbers: the quality and variety of food, entertainment and ports of call, plus the opportunity to build your own experience each day. It's hard to overlook the fun factor, too.”

“There are numerous benefits and positive aspects,” said Charles Moore, project director, Faith Christian Fellowship. “ The price of a cruise for length of stay, variety of food available 24 hours a day, and first-class entertainment is phenomenal. There is also ample time aboard ship for meeting attendees to fellowship and build relationships around scheduled activities or at shared meals. Meeting attendees have but to arrive, and their every need is provided. How convenient and how stress-relieving. The added bonus of stopping at ports of call is icing on the cake.”
