Forum for Socially Responsible Travel
The first VolunTourism Forum was held February 2 at The Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. The forum has put a name, VolunTourism, on a trend that has been percolating for years: integrating the best of travel and tourism with the opportunity to serve and enhance the destination.
David L. Clemmons, director of VolunTours, Chula Vista, Calif., which develops community-focused experiences for visitors to the Baja Norte Region of Mexico, hopes to spread the word about VolunTourism to the meeting industry. “Ninety percent of people will volunteer if asked. The meeting industry hasn't done a good enough job of asking.”
The forum included a track for planners, as well as a teambuilding activity in which attendees assembled beehives for a women's beehive cooperative in Mexicali, Mexico. VolunTours plans to make the forum an annual event.
