World’s Biggest Cruise Ship--Again
Strolling Royal Caribbean’s enormous new ship, Liberty of the Seas, it’s easy to understand why the average age of the Royal Caribbean cruiser is only 42. The vibe is youthful, with such elements as a “FlowRider” surf simulator, a boxing ring within what is said to be the world’s largest fitness center at sea, an ice-skating rink, and a rock-climbing wall among the many active diversions onboard. The attentive and enthusiastic staff (1,360 in total) also contribute to the lively atmosphere.
A sister ship to Freedom of the Seas launched last June, Liberty has 1,817 staterooms, including 842 with balconies, and all with flat-screen televisions and beds that convert to queen-size. I was concerned that I would be wandering around lost during much of my three-night sail, but a centrally located “Royal Promenade” of shops and eateries unifies the 1,112-foot-long ship interior and makes it easy to get oriented. There’s so much to do, see, eat, and drink onboard the 15 passenger decks that the ship feels like a luxury destination unto itself.
Liberty is also purpose-built for meetings and incentives, which make up a significant “double-digit” percentage of Royal Caribbean’s business, says Patrick Mitchell, vice president, sales, Royal Caribbean International. In addition to a dedicated 368-seat conference center, a 1,380-seat theater and a wide range of lounges and bars can be used for private group functions. As well, planners can set up special activities that range from teambuilding on the 11-route rock-climbing wall to behind-the-scenes receptions with the ship’s officers.
The ship will alternate with Freedom between seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries departing from Miami. Both are available for charters, an option that Royal Caribbean president Adam Goldstein says is becoming increasingly popular for large groups. Planners need to book at least six months in advance of the sail date.
