22 Airports Apply for Registered Traveler

Officials at 22 U.S. Airports have applied to implement Registered Traveler programs, and RT providers hope to have programs up and running in several of them by the end of this year.

The list, released by the Transportation Security Administration after a Freedom of Information Act request by USA Today, includes Albany, N.Y.; Anchorage, Alaska; Atlanta; Baltimore; Birmingham, Ala.; Chicago (Midway and O'Hare); Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky; Denver; Huntsville, Ala.; Indianapolis; Jacksonville, Fla.; Little Rock, Ark.; Los Angeles; Miami; Pittsburgh; Reno, Nev.; San Jose, Calif.; Springfield/Branson, Mo.; Waco, Texas; Dulles, Va.; and Washington, D.C.

The process of getting the RT program up and running has been long, but the end appears to be in sight. The TSA has approved security, privacy, and compliance standards for the program but still needs to give final certification to providers and participating airports.

Several companies are trying to get into the Registered Traveler business. Verified Identity Pass Inc., through its RT product Clear, runs the country's only operational RT program in Orlando. Verified/Clear is also enrolling participants for programs at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Indianapolis International Airport, New York JFK International Airport's British Airways Terminal 7, and San José Mineta International Airport. Other providers include companies such as Unisys Corp. in Blue Bell, Pa., and Saflink Corp., in Kirkland, Wash.
