Beyond Salad: Canola Oil Fuels Airport
Munich Airport is converting its ground services vehicles to burn biodiesel. FMG, the airport operating company, aims to increase the use of renewable energy sources at the airport.
FMG will convert one-third of its apron vehicles from diesel to biodiesel. This plant-based fuel is an environmentally friendly energy supply that is sustainable long-term, and is more than one-third cheaper than diesel fuel. After conversion of the vehicles, FMG can realize annual cost savings of up to 1 million euros, or slightly more than $1.3 million.
Munich Airport uses up to 6 million liters of diesel fuel a year. The plan is to replace up to one-third of this fuel with canola oil. In 2007, the airport intends to use 1.2 million liters of canola oil, and will increase that amount to 2 million liters in the following year.
The switch will also benefit farmers and canola oil producers near the airport.
