Conference Center Revs Up Waterfront

A REVITALIZED WATERFRONT is on the docket in Bremerton, Wash. And the new 10,000-square-foot Kitsap Conference Center, which opened harborside in July, takes the city well on its way to its goal. The new center has more than 10,000 total square feet of space, accommodating as many as 700 people. Its 6,000-square-foot ballroom can be subdivided into four. The center is a two-minute walk to the ferry, and it is only a 60-minute ferry ride across Puget Sound from downtown Seattle.

Satisfy your chocolate cravings in what's billed as “the sweetest place on Earth” while checking out Hershey Lodge and Convention Center's recent renovation of its Monarch Suites and pre-function areas. The Monarch space can now be divided into four rooms (some of which are further subdividable). Many airwalls were replaced with permanent walls, and natural light now pours into the North Corridor. Stained beams, rich moldings, and iron fixtures are part of the refurbished décor, as is a new elevator and grand staircase, updated lighting, and an integrated sound system. A new North link to the Great American Hall makes for seamless circulation and access among all three of the Lodge's main meeting areas. www.hersheymeetings.com

Gentlepersons, start your engines! Construction on a $40 million, 310-suite Embassy Suites hotel and an adjoining 80,000-square-foot convention center in Concord, N.C., will begin in November. The hotel, less than a mile from the 500,000-seat Lowe's Motor Speedway, is in the heart of NASCAR country. A grand opening is scheduled for spring 2006. John Q. Hammons Hotels will manage the hotel, convention center, and the city-owned Rocky River Golf Club, which the hotel overlooks. www.jqhhotels.com

The Westin Horton Plaza in San Diego has finished an $8 million renovation of guest rooms and public spaces, which includes a remodel of the fitness facilities. The 450 spruced-up guest rooms and eight suites are a short walk from the convention center as well as the historic Gaslamp Quarter. The hotel can accommodate meetings for as many as 1,200 people in its 35,000 square feet of meeting space, which includes the 9,064-square-foot California ballroom and the City View Outdoor Terrace. All meeting facilities now have wireless Internet access. Westin is introducing Westin Workout Powered by Reebok and Heavenly Bed Yoga in 77 hotels, including the Horton Plaza property, by the end of the year. It features a workout regimen for its fitness facilities specifically designed for travelers by Reebok. The Heavenly Bed Yoga regimen is literally done in bed and is designed to “de-kink the traveler's body and relax the mind.” It is available on Westin's custom TV channel. www.westin.com
