Hotels Bet on Gaming Growth

  1. Donald Trump announced plans to build Tower II of the TRUMP INTERNATIONAL HOTEL & TOWER LAS VEGAS on the April 8 episode of The Apprentice. Tower II will be 64 stories tall, the same as Tower I, and will include meeting and convention facilities, a fitness center, and more. Specific floor plans and number of units are being finalized. Tower I, which is scheduled to open in 2008, will have 1,282 rooms and feature a spa and salon; a business center with meeting facilities; and a heated outdoor pool.

  2. SANDIA RESORT & CASINO, Albuquerque, N.M., offers 228 guest rooms as well as more than 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space. When guests are not meeting, they can enjoy the casino's more than 110,000 square feet of gaming space.

  3. CITYCENTER, MGM Mirage's $7 billion vertical city in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, is accepting reservations for meetings and conventions. The 60-story, 4,000-room resort-casino opens in late 2009, and will feature approximately 300,000 square feet of meeting space. In addition to the gaming resort and convention facility, CityCenter will feature two 400-room, nongaming hotels including Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas. Within the resort-casino's meeting and convention facility, four ballrooms will accommodate gatherings of up to 5,000 attendees. The largest ballroom will be 51,000 square feet; two will be 38,000 square feet; and the fourth will have 20,000 square feet of space.

  4. PECHANGA RESORT & CASINO, Temecula, Calif., offers 522 guest accommodations. The resort also offers eight restaurants and California's largest casino, with 188,000 square feet of gaming space. The facility's largest ballroom measures 22,000 square feet, and its teleconference center can seat 118 attendees. In addition, the Pechanga Showroom offers seating for 1,200, stadium-style.

  5. The 400-room MGM GRAND DETROIT is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2007. It will include 30,000 square feet of event space; a 14,000-square-foot grand ballroom; three meeting rooms of 1,600 square feet each; and two executive boardrooms of 710 square feet each. The new hotel will be adjacent to the MGM Grand Detroit Casino, which offers 75,000 square feet of casino floor space.

  6. MGM GRAND AT FOXWOODS, Mashantucket, Conn., is on schedule for completion in spring 2008. The $700 million facility will quadruple its meeting space and add 824 guest accommodations to its inventory of 1,400, as well as a 21,000-square-foot spa. It will have the Northeast's largest ballroom, at 50,000 square feet, and a theater that seats more than 4,000 guests. The project includes an additional 115,000 square feet of meeting space, bringing the total to 170,000 square feet; breakout space and a junior ballroom totaling 30,000 square feet; and a 50,000-square-foot casino. Amenities include wireless Internet, videoconferencing capabilities, and an in-house digital signage system. In 2005, Foxwoods completed a $300 million expansion that included the addition of two Rees Jones-designed golf courses, one public and one private, at Lake of Isles.

  7. AMERISTAR CASINO ST. CHARLES opened a $14 million conference and meeting center late last year. The 55,000-square-foot center features 19,000 square feet of meeting space including a 10,000-square-foot ballroom. It is part of a $240 million expansion, which includes a 400-room all-suite hotel. All improvements are expected to be open in late 2007. A business center and banquet kitchens complete the conference facility, which is on the second level of Ameristar's $360 million casino entertainment facility.

  8. The 34-story hotel tower at MOHEGAN SUN, Uncasville, Conn., is undergoing a $13.8 million refurbishment. As of June, all 1,200 guest rooms and suites will be upgraded. Renovations are taking place floor by floor. In addition, Mohegan Sun will begin Project Horizon, a $740 million expansion, this summer. The cornerstone of the project is a new 1,000-room hotel. Project Horizon also calls for 115,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, as well as a new 64,000-square-foot casino.

  9. TULALIP RESORT & SPA, Tulalip, Wa., is scheduled to open in early 2008. It will add a 370-room hotel, as well as more than 30,000 square feet of meeting and reception space, to the Tulalip Casino.

  10. MANDALAY BAY, LAS VEGAS, is adding the only climate-controlled poolside gaming in the city. Set on 11 acres, Mandalay Bay Beach is undergoing a $30 million expansion. A three-story, glass-fronted casino will offer access to the sand and water while offering guests air-conditioned comfort. On the first level, beachgoers will be able to dine in the shaded, open-air Beach Bar & Grill. The second floor will feature beachside gaming. At the top will sit the five Villas Soleil, ranging from 250 to 500 square feet and accommodating up to 16 guests each.
