Spa Happenings

  • WET-THE SPA AT TI (formerly Treasure Island) opened last July on the Las Vegas Strip. Etched glass panels meant to reflect ripples of moving water greet guests upon arrival. WET offers water-based signature services ranging from The Heiress, a rich golden scrub, wrap, and massage followed by a sprinkling of real gold dust; to the Sleepy Town Massage, using chamomile, marjoram, rose, and geranium; and the Bedtime Bath, a relaxing soak in lavender and mandarin. TI offers nearly 3,000 guest accommodations and 18,000 square feet of flexible meeting space.

  • THE WESTIN RIVERFRONT RESORT & SPA, a 235-room, full-service hotel and resort facility in Avon, Colo., is anticipated to open in time for the 2008 ski season. The complex will include a spa and fitness facility, restaurants, and approximately 4,700 square feet of meeting space. It will also feature a pedestrian-friendly retail plaza and a high-speed, eight-passenger gondola that will transport skiers and snowboarders to the adjacent Beaver Creek Ski Resort.

  • The MAYFLOWER INN & SPA, in Washington, Conn., opened in 2006. This destination spa offers 21 rooms and nine suites. Guests stay at the inn and spend their days at the Spa House, a 20,000-foot-facility offering eight treatment rooms, pool, whirlpool, four exercise studios, and a full slate of treatments and fitness programs.

  • THE LODGE AT WOODLOCH, in Hawley, Pa., allows guests to enjoy a personalized spa experience. Terraces and porches open to the pristine lake, ponds, and woodland gardens. Located on 75 wooded acres with a private lake in the Lake Region of Northeast Pennsylvania, the lodge is just two hours from New York City and features 58 luxury accommodations and a 40,000-square-foot spa.

  • The PRESIDENTE INTERCONTINENTAL COZUMEL RESORT & SPA reopened in November after a transformation into an exclusive luxury resort. All of the resort's 220 rooms and suites boast widescreen plasma television sets, designer furnishings, and top-level amenities. One of the stars of the resort is the 6,500-square-foot spa, offering a full menu of treatments that incorporate the indigenous products of Cozumel, such as The Mayan Journey and the Mayan Moon Massage. Guests can enjoy activities including snorkeling, diving, and swimming with dolphins as well as golf at nearby Cozumel Country Club.

  • The SHERATON HACIENDA DEL MAR RE-SORT & SPA, LOS CABOS, MEXICO, has renovated and enlarged its Cactus Spa & Fitness Center. The spa, which re-opened in December, includes 11,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space and has a total of 12 spa beds. The facility is designed with the Seven Pillars of Well-Being — beauty, life balance, harmony, aqua, vitality, nature, and nutrition — in mind. The resort has 270 guest rooms, five restaurants, four pools, and more than 18,018 square feet of function space.

  • In St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, the WESTIN ST. MAARTEN DAWN BEACH RESORT & SPA opened January 23. The resort features 308 guest rooms and six suites, each with a balcony or patio, and the largest freshwater infinity-edge pool on the island. The 10,124 square-foot Hibiscus Spa, specializing in massage, is the largest on the island with 13 treatment rooms. The resort also has a Vegas-style casino, and golf is nearby in Anguilla at the newly designed 18-hole Greg Norman course. The resort has 10,000 square feet of indoor meeting space in seven rooms and 10,000 square feet of outdoor event space.

  • CURTAIN BLUFF in Antigua, which offers 72 beachfront accommodations, has a new 5,000-square-foot spa. The Spa at Curtain Bluff, with five treatment rooms, sits on the bluff overlooking the ocean and the neighboring island of Montserrat. Curtain Bluff's signature treatment is a caviar and champagne massage.

  • EcoTulum Resorts decided in December to weatherproof Amilik, its luxury spa lodge in Patagonia, Chile, and revise the project, renaming the resort ZULIKA and converting the hotel's tents into all-season structures. The changes come as a result of travelers' growing demand to experience all of Patagonia's seasons. The upgrades to the 10 luxury accommodations will include insulated walls and manually controlled heating systems. Developers have given fall 2007 as the revised opening.

  • ST. BRIDES SPA HOTEL, which overlooks sandy Carmarthen Bay at Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire, Wales, has opened a new Marine Therapy Spa and cliff-top restaurant. This follows a multimillion-dollar transformation that upgraded all 35 bedrooms, reception area, bar, and public areas to create West Wales' first luxury destination spa hotel. The cliff-edge spa includes a thermal suite with a salt grotto, herbal steam room, rock sauna, ice fountain, indoor/outdoor vitality pool with infinity edge, and more.
