Peppermint is known to help concentration and aid digestion. At the Hilton West Palm Beach, try a Peppermint Bar for a mid-afternoon meeting break when energy is flagging. The Peppermint Bar menu includes peppermint-infused tea, dark chocolate, mints, hot chocolate, aroma spray, and more. (Depending on the time of day, the hotel also has mixologists on hand who can teach a class on how to make a peppermint-flavored martini.) The 400-room resort has 24,000 square feet of indoor meeting space and 2,400 square feet of lawn space.
The JW Marriott Chicago is offering a handful of fitness-oriented meeting breaks for groups of up to 200 attendees. We like “posture perfect,” a 15-minute session teaching Pilates-based strength training movements. The exercises, which are easy to incorporate into anyone’s daily routine, focus on the core and back muscles to improve alignment and strong posture. The class is led by the Spa at JW Chicago, located inside the 610-room JW Marriott, which also offers 44,000 square feet of meeting space.
The Hilton New Orleans has a cozy, speakeasy-style piano lounge, Public Belt, “hidden” on its second floor. (The lounge takes its name from the city’s railroad.) Get the secret word and use this space for a day's-end break including a hands-on mixology class that begins with a lesson about the history of the cocktail, followed by an interactive demonstration of how to craft the city’s signature drink, the cognac-based Sazerac. The Hilton New Orleans has more than 130,000 square feet of meeting space, a 90,000-square-foot spa, and 1,622 guest rooms.
Laughter, that is! To reduce stress while increasing endorphins between meetings, your attendees can try out a 15-minute “laughter yoga” session (it’s a thing; Google it). This is an easy and comfortable group bonding experience. Sessions are led by coaches from the Well & Being Spa, located at the 648-room Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (316,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space) and the 431-room Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas (41,000 square feet of meeting space). If you’ve got more time, consider a selection from the Well & Being Spa lunch and learn series. Topics include mindful eating, slow aging, cooking demonstrations, vision board workshops, and more.
Some towns are renowned for certain snacks or drinks… When your meeting is all business and attendees can’t get out and enjoy the local flavors, bring it all to them. For example, the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront in Portland, Ore., has you covered with meeting breaks that feature local faves VooDoo Doughnuts and Stumptown Coffee. For more local flair, look for bike artwork throughout the property, bike rentals for guests, and even bike storage in some of the 506 guest rooms. (Portland loves bikes.) The property just renovated its 14,144-square-foot Oregon Ballroom.
The Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino in San Juan taps into the popup trend by inviting local vendors to create a popup Old San Juan street in a breakout room. Cultural goods with authentic Latin flair are on offer for your attendees. The 503-room resort has 40,000 square feet of meeting space and is adjacent to the Puerto Rico Convention Center, which offers 580,000 square feet of meeting space.
During this fun break activity from the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Ariz., an “aura reader” takes a picture of attendees and interprets their auras, which are expressed as colors. Which color represents the workaholic? Who needs to be number one? Who is the peacemaker? Your aura will tell you. The 109-room Sanctuary on Camelback is set on 53 acres.
Executive Chef Josef Huber at Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, Mich., offers his house-made granola, full of superfoods, for attendees to layer along with yogurt into custom parfaits.
