San Jose Arena, home to the NHL Sharks, now welcomes groups of 10,000 or more in its 20,000-seat space. In a release, the San Jose Convention & Visitors Bureaus says its one of the "very few" bureaus to market a city arena for meetings, but it may not be able to claim that for long. November 20 marked the groundbreaking of the $160 million Denver's Pepsi Center. It will be the home of the NHL Colorado Avalanche and the NBA Denver Nuggets when it opens for the 1999 2000 sports season. And the Denver convention bureau is eager to let planners know that meetings are welcome, too. The arena will seat up to 20,000, depending on the configuration.

And the trend continues in Indianapolis. The Indiana Fieldhouse, a $175 million arena opening in fall 1999, will provide a state-of-the-art space for the city's NBA Pacers (replacing Market Square Arena), but large meeting sessions are welcome, too. The Fieldhouse will be three blocks from the Indiana Convention Center & RCA Dome.

On November 1, management of the Oakland (Calif.)Convention Center was turned over to Integrated Services Corporation, which is affiliated with the adjoining 483-room Oakland Marriott City Center Hotel. The convention center and hotel function space will now be marketed as a single 89,000-square-foot unit.

When phase one of the Singapore Expo opens early next year, it will rank as the largest exhibition center outside of Japan. And it will be the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) that will manage the mega-center's more than 645,000 square feet in six halls. PSA now manages Singapore's World Trade Center.
