This used to come up a lot on a meetings industry listserv I used to belong to: How to hold a silent auction. This is the best resource I've found, though, since it's by fisheries.org, you may want to ignore the part where they say the categories of stuff to be auctioned off that are most successful include fishing and hunting trips, and antique fishing equipment (and for goodness sakes, do not auction off a puppy!), but otherwise it's a pretty good blueprint for silent auction neophytes.
