* CHANGING FACES The Network Conference Co. has hired David W. Hayes as director of sales at The Hayes Mansion Conference Center in San Jose, Calif. Hayes was most recently director of national accounts at the Wigwam Resort in Arizona. The Network Conference Co. also has announced the appointment of Victoria Shaw as director of sales at Network Meeting Center at TechMart, a conference center in Santa Clara, Calif. Shaw most recently worked at the Manhattan Beach Marriott in Southern California, where she served as director of catering, sales, and event management.
Ann Boehme has joined the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City as director of education and the conference center. Boehme's responsibilities includethe Academy's conference center, which has 17,000 square feet of meeting space, and developing online education. A 28-year meeting planning veteran, Boehme has, for the past 10 years, run her own business, providing program development, marketing, and coordination of .
Benchmark Hospitality has appointed Harold Ho director of sales at The CIBC Leadership Centre in King City, Ontario. The CIBC Leadership Centre, 40 miles from Toronto, is a corporate training and meeting facility owned by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
* GOING PLACES The expanded Media and Business Center at International Conference Resorts' Cheyenne Mountain Conference Resort in Colorado Springs, Colo., is open. The business center upgrade included new copiers and computers, including an IBM client-server computer with flat monitor for guest use, and a large-scale plotter and oversized printer to let attendees create and print banners and posters. The media center expansion increased the size of the on-site production facility, which includes state-of-the-art digital video-editing capabilities, video support, and projection services supported by a full-time technical staff. The staff also supplies digital photography and videoconferencing services. The 316-room resort offers 40,000 square feet of meeting space, including a tiered amphitheater. Among the recreational facilities are an 18-hole Pete Dye golf course, a 35-acre lake, 18 tennis courts, and a fitness center.
The Executive Conference & Training Center at Dulles (Va.) has opened with more than 10,000 square feet of meeting space in six rooms accommodating six to 80 people. The center is equipped with the latest telecommunications and AV, including high-speed Internet access. Washington Dulles International Airport is two miles west of the facility.
Benchmark Hospitality added three new centers to its portfolio. Benchmark now manages the World Trade Institute Conference Center, at One World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. A day meeting facility, the center occupies the entire 55th floor and offers 15,000 square feet of meeting space. Some $2 million in renovations is planned, including upgraded communications and AV technology, and the installation of Internet kiosks. Benchmark also is working with Bangkok-based Eastern Star Real Estate to turn the Eastern Star Resort on Thailand's east coast into a conference resort. The property has a Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course on-site, along with high-end condos and residences. The existing facilities will be upgraded and a 200-room hotel and detached 14,000-square-foot conference center will be added.
Benchmark also has broken ground on the $50 million Stonewall Resort and Conference Center in Roanoke, W.Va. The 2,000-acre lakeside property, to open in spring, will include a 196-guest room lodge with conference center, guest cottages, and an 18-hole golf course.
In other news from Benchmark, its Chaminade Executive Conference Center in Santa Cruz, Calif., has completed a $2.5 million renovation. All 152 rooms and public spaces were refurbished, and four executive suites were created. The center, in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains overlooking Monterey Bay, has a fitness center, tennis courts, and a gym in addition to 12,000 square feet of meeting space.
And finally, Benchmark is developing The Chattanoogan in Chattanooga, Tenn., a 210,000-square-foot conference center and hotel to be located at the center of a burgeoning economic development zone in the city's Southside district. The 200-room property will offer 20 meeting rooms, including a 90-seat amphitheater, a restaurant and banquet facilities, two private dining rooms, and an adjacent parking garage to accommodate more than 1,000 vehicles. The Chattanoogan opens in spring.
Boston Properties Conference Center opened this past spring in the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco's Financial District. The day center offers four meeting rooms for 6 to 70 attendees. The center also offers a reception area, a catering kitchen, and break areas.
The Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel and Waterfront Conference Center opens this month. The property, in Portsmouth, Va., will offer 24,000 square feet of meeting space and the latest communications technology, including T1 Internet access in all meeting rooms and guest rooms. An Executive Learning Center will include five dedicated conference rooms and a 70-seat amphitheater with videoconferencing and interactive computer training capabilities.
The Valley Forge Scanticon Hotel & Conference Center opened this year in Valley Forge, Pa. More than 30,000 square feet of meeting space is available in 23 rooms, the largest of which can accommodate 200 guests. Some 160 guest rooms of the former Sheraton Valley Forge have ben converted into deluxe Scanticon guest rooms. Each meeting room has ISDN lines and teleconferencing.
Earlier this year the Hudson Valley Resort & Spa in Kerhonkson, N.Y., completed a renovation project that included the creation of a 7,029-square-foot amphitheater with state-of-the-art AV. The resort's 300 rooms were renovated, along with its 30,000 square feet of meeting space, including the Executive Conference Center, with eight rooms for 10 to 250 guests, and a Grand Ballroom that holds 1,000 guests. The resort has an 18-hole golf course and a spa.
Dolce International recently took over management of the 294-room Industry Hills Sheraton Resort & Conference Center in San Gabriel Valley, Calif., which is now undergoing capital improvements. A dedicated conference wing and business center will be added. Communications technology also will be overhauled. The Industry Hills property has two 18-hole golf courses, 17 lighted tennis courts with stadium seating for 2,100 spectators, and 20,000 square feet of meeting space.
In other news from Dolce, the company's Vaalsbroek Conference Hotel in the Vaals region of the Netherlands has completed a $10 million expansion. The property now has 130 guest rooms, 20 meeting rooms, and the Dolce Vital Beauty and Health Spa, which features an indoor pool, fitness center, and treatment rooms. Internet access and videoconferencing capabilities also were added.
And Lakeway Inn, a Dolce-managed conference resort in Austin, Texas, has completed its two-year, $20 million expansion. The resort has grown to 239 rooms with more than 20,000 square feet of meeting space. Three meeting rooms and six breakout rooms were added, along with dual data ports in all guest rooms. By year end, the property will have high-speed Internet access in all meeting rooms and guest rooms and access to a mobile videoconferencing unit.
Wireless Local Area Network (LAN) technology has been installed at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Center in London, offering instant wireless Internet access from anywhere in the center. The seven-story property is located in the heart of Westminster.
The Hotel Inter-Continental New Orleans has completely redone its Executive Conference Center and has added data ports with ISDN lines and an in-house meeting coordinator. the center accommodates up to 275 guests in seven meeting rooms, including a 252-seat amphitheater.
