This month, we're writing about a different kind of “read”: a read on your employees. Managing by Motivation: the MbM Questionnaire, by Marshall Sashkin, PhD (Human Resource Development Press), is one of the simplest, most logical tools we have seen. Once you plot employees' answers, it is clear what motivates them: safety/security; social/belonging; self-esteem; or self-actualization. Sashkin's guide then discusses what drives people with each of those four tendencies — all useful information for managers who want to tailor their motivational strategies. The questionnaire can be completed and self-scored in 15 minutes. It includes brief interpretive material as well.
New Sensation
Miami Beach's art deco district just keeps getting better. Opening this month at the northern part of South Beach, The Palms (which was formerly the Miami Beach Ocean Resort) is part drama, part tropical elegance, part grand escape.
Patrick Kennedy, the architect behind The Palms' $5 million transformation, describes the lobby as being worthy of a “theatrical entrance, a fusion of South American, Indonesian, and a little Silicon Valley thrown in.” The tropical gardens connect directly to the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The Palms has 7,000 square feet of meeting space. All meeting rooms have high-speed Internet access, videoconferencing capability and audiovisual equipment rental.
