WHAT'S THE BEST BOOK YOU'VE READ THIS YEAR? Shakespeare's Kitchen by Francine Segan. This may be the first scholarly fun cookbook; it is about menus and recipes of Shakespeare's time.
-
WHAT'S SPINNING ON YOUR CD PLAYER? Barber's Adagio for Strings, Opus 11. This adagio is generally regarded as the saddest music ever written, although I propose Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas by Purcell.
-
WHAT'S YOUR HIDDEN TALENT? I am a close-up magician. I was the chief instructor for the Institute of Magic of New York when I first moved to New York, and I've performed 29 shows at the Magic Castle in Hollywood.
- WHO INSPIRES YOU? High school seniors and college freshmen inspire me. To many of them, it is all about the future and unlimited possibilities.

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSIONS? My 1785 Betts violin; my Steinway grand bearing the autographs of the Steinway brothers; a Kellar-Thurston “Mantle of Magic” 1908 Strobridge lithograph; my Domenico Spano Norfolk country suits; a Dai Vernon autographed, 1902 copy of S.W. Erdnase's The Expert at the Card Table: Artifice, Ruse, and Subterfuge at the Card Table; and my grandfather's gold pocket watch.
