The steps of the Texas state capitol in Austin will be a meetings industry hot spot on April 14, when a Global Meetings Industry Day rally brings together meeting pros, elected officials, business leaders, and local media.
GMID is an expansion of North American Meetings Industry Day held in April 2015, which generated 88 events across the continent addressing the impact of meetings, conventions, incentive travel, and trade shows on people, business, and communities. This year’s broader event, organized by the advocacy coalition Meetings Mean Business, expects an even bigger impact, and the just-announced Austin event is likely to be a highlight.
The afternoon rally at the capitol will be followed by a press conference and a panel discussion with industry leaders: Paul Van Deventer, president and CEO, Meeting Professionals International; Deborah Sexton, president and CEO, Professional Convention Management Association; Cathy Breden, CAE, CMP, executive vice president and COO, International Association of Exhibitions and Events; Mike Dominguez, co-chair, Meetings Mean Business, and senior vice president of sales, MGM Resorts; and Ken Sanders, president, Freeman AV. The panel, moderated by Kevin Olsen, founding partner, Keyway LLC, will be streamed live and tweeted using the hashtag #GMIDTX.
“The rally at the State Capitol in Austin provides a local platform where we will demonstrate the impact our industry plays in building personal relationships, driving innovation and positive business outcomes, and supporting strong communities,” said Van Deventer.
The local members of 11 meetings industry associations plan to participate in the GMID Austin event:
