The Midwest has many large, easily accessible airports. Illinois is the hub for national and international traffic at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

O'Hare is home to United and American, and served by 45 other airlines. It's about an hour from the Loop by train or taxi. Chicago's smaller airport, Midway, is served by 16 commercial airlines and is about 30 minutes from Chicago. Both airports are accessible by Chicago Transit Authority rapid rail lines. Continental Airport Express vans from O'Hare cost $25.50 round-trip; $19 from Midway.

A $1.6 billion expansion of Detroit's Metropolitan Airport, begun in 1996, will include a new 76-gate midfield terminal, a fourth runway, and renovation of the three existing terminals. The new terminal is expected to be open by December 2000. Detroit Metropolitan is about 20 miles southwest of downtown.

For groups going to northern Michigan, the Traverse City Airport and Pellston Airport serve Boyne Country and the ferry service to Mackinac Island.

Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport is six miles from downtown. It is a 90-minute straight shot from Mitchell on Interstate 94 to Madison, or a few minutes by air to Madison's Dane County Airport and the Wisconsin Dells.

Minneapolis/Saint Paul International Airport is 10 miles from downtown. Airport Express offers direct transfers to downtown hotels every 15 minutes.

In Ohio, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is 10 miles southwest of downtown, and Rapid Transit rail zips guests downtown to Public Square in 20 minutes. Continental Airlines, which has its Midwest hub in Cleveland, has applied for authority to operate daily service between Hopkins and London.

Port Columbus International Airport is 10 miles east of Columbus and is served by airport shuttles and taxis.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is 12 miles south of Cincinnati and is served by Jetport Express Shuttles and taxis to downtown hotels.

The Indianapolis International Airport provides service to most major cities. It is a 10-minute drive from downtown.
