Work begins at the end of this year on a $1 billion convention, exhibition, and entertainment district in Sydney’s popular Darling Harbour area. The International Convention Centre Sydney, or ICC Sydney, already has booked two major events and is holding space for 88 others, despite its opening date being more than three years away—December 2016.
Among the highlights of ICC Sydney are an ability to hold four fully separated, concurrent events of more than 12,000 delegates; total exhibition space of more than 430,000 square feet; a 5,400-square-foot outdoor event deck featuring city views; a red-carpet theater with 8,000 seats; a grand ballroom that accommodates banquets of up to 2,000 guests; and a new hotel complex with some 900 rooms expected.
The property will be operated by AEG Ogden, a joint venture between Australian venue management interests and AEG Facilities of the United States. It manages venues throughout the Asia-Pacific region, including convention centers in Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Kuala Lumpur, Qatar, andOman (under construction);arenas including Sydney’s Allphones Arena, the Sydney Entertainment Centre (from December 2013), the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, Perth Arena, Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane;and several live theatres in Australia.
