A new $2 million conference center expansion has broken ground at Island Resort & Casino in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the town of Harris.

The resort, which owns and operates Sweetgrass Golf Club, will nearly double private function space to 17,400 square feet with the addition of the new center, scheduled for completion in April 2011. Seating capacity at the conference center will be increased to 828. Once it is completed, the convention center will allow concurrent events with a combination of five floor plans.

Located adjacent to the Sweetgrass pro shop, the center is within an easy indoor walk of the 275 guest rooms, in-house restaurants, and the casino, which has more than 1,400 slot machines and 24/7 Vegas-style gaming, along with craps, blackjack, roulette, and poker.

Sweetgrass Golf Club and the Island Resort & Casino are owned and operated by the Hannahville Indian Community, a band of the Potawatomi Nation.
