Leon (Guanajuato state) Leon, the largest city in the state of Guanajuato, was founded in 1576. Today, it is the leading shoe-manufacturing city in Mexico. Most of the city's buildings are colonial in architectural style. Flowering plazas, fine old buildings around the central square, a colorful market, and a pedestrian mall add to the city's charm.
