For a New York City GMID event, local chapters of Meeting Professionals International and the Professional Convention Management Association are working together to present an evening of hot topic, TED-style talks at the Grand Hyatt in Midtown. Among the speakers will be Scott Way, The Frontier Project, talking about “The Cartography of Negotiation.”
The finals of MPI Sweden’s annual competition to identify future trends in the meeting industry is planned for GMID in Stockholm. On April 14, four finalists will compete in the last round of the "Golden Binocular" event.
Meet AC, the sales and marketing arm of the Atlantic City (N.J.) Convention Center, plans to focus its GMID event on its green initiatives, offering tours of the Atlantic City Utilities Authority’s Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Convention Center’s solar panels. A cocktail reception and guest speakers will follow the tours.
At the Texas Capitol in Austin, 11 industry chapter organizations have signed on to support a rally, press conference, and panel discussion for GMID. The panel will include Mike Dominguez, co-chair, Meetings Mean Business, and senior vice president of sales, MGM Resorts (pictured), as well as leaders from MPI, PCMA, and the International Association of Exhibitions and Events. At Mexico City’s Centro Banamex Convention and Exhibition Center, government and tourism officials will present new data on the meetings industry in Mexico. The event, organized by SECTUR, CPTM, and MPI Mexico, will be broadcast to GMID events in other Mexican states.
In Zagreb, the Croatian Meeting Professionals Association is planning to mark GMID with an open discussion focused on how the meeting industry impacts the community.
For the Las Vegas GMID event, a panel of local industry leaders will discuss the impact of meetings on the city, and special guest Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, will provide an industry overview. The event will also include a tour of the city’s new T-Mobile Arena.
Meetings Mean Business Co-chair Richard Harper of HelmsBriscoe is headquartered in Phoenix, and his organizations are working in collaboration with Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, the Phoenix Convention Center, Visit Phoenix, and the Arizona Chapters of MPI and Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International, on a GMID morning educational panel discussion at the convention center.
The Society for Incentive Travel Excellence’s Global Education Week, which overlaps with GMID, will be offering daily online education for the incentive travel industry April 11–15.
In Canada, which has been celebrating a National Meetings Industry Day for 20 years, MPI’s British Columbia chapter will hold a morning of education at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster. An event is also being planned by MPI’s Greater Calgary Chapter, and other Canadian events are likely on the way as well.
