According to the IrishHealth.com, Ireland is responding to a recent scandal by introducing new legislation that would make continuing medical education compulsory, among other things. From the article:
- Tanaiste Mary Harney [said there must be] mandatory continuing professional development and skills assessment at all levels of healthcare and staff need to attend updating of skills and methods programmes and should be able to recognise that procedures change in accordance with evidence-based research.
The Tanaiste said outmoded and unnecessary practices ought to be recognised as such and changed as soon as information is available.
She said the new Medical Practitioners Act to be published later this year will introduce more streamlined and transparent processing of complaints against doctors; it will clearly define the responsibilities of the Medical Council in relation to doctors' education and training and will make continuing professional development and education compulsory for all doctors.
