- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is sending its doctors and nurses to help deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Meanwhile, FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford has gone to Atlanta personally to help oversee food efforts there.
In the largest deployment of FDA staff ever, the agency is sending more than 100 of its Commissioned Corps., including uniformed doctors, nurses and pharmacists, to help with the hurricane fight, according to a senior FDA official.
